Jesus the Good Shepherd
The Monnci Art Jesus the Good Shepherd icon was hand-painted by Monika Żurowska on a linden wood panel. It is a contemporary interpretation of one of the most moving images of Christ – the Shepherd who searches, guides and carries the sheep entrusted to His care.
The composition was inspired by a contemporary iconographic design by Father Mateusz Orłowski. In my interpretation, I focused on simplicity, the rhythm of the garments and a restrained, harmonious colour palette.
This is a distinctive work within the Monnci Art collection because no gold was used in its creation. The matte surface and warm red-pink background allow the viewer’s attention to remain entirely on Christ and the symbolic gesture of carrying the sheep upon His shoulders.
The icon was created using traditional egg tempera. I deliberately limited the palette to six pigments: titanium white, yellow ochre, red ochre, ultramarine, burnt umber and cadmium red. Built gradually, layer by layer, the highlights and folds of the garments give the figure depth while preserving the stillness and contemplation characteristic of sacred iconography.
The Good Shepherd – an image of protection and closeness
The image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd carries one of the most personal messages within Christian iconography. Christ does not remain distant. He searches, bends towards the human person and carries their burden.
The sheep resting upon Christ’s shoulders becomes a symbol of the one who has been found, protected and guided. The rocky landscape emphasises the journey undertaken by the Shepherd to reach the one in need of His presence.
This hand-painted Jesus the Good Shepherd icon may become a personal symbol of faith, trust and spiritual presence, as well as a distinctive work of sacred art for a home interior or private prayer space.
Its calm, contemporary colour palette allows the icon to complement both traditional and modern interiors.
