Holy Trinity after Andrei Rublev

The Holy Trinity icon was hand-painted by Monika Żurowska in the Monnci Art studio and inspired by one of the most important and symbolic compositions in the history of icon painting — Andrei Rublev’s renowned Trinity.

The work refers to the Byzantine tradition and the spirituality of the Christian East. The three Angels gathered around the table form a composition filled with silence, harmony and inner balance. Their subtle gestures, mutual gazes and gently inclined figures lead the eye towards the centre of the image, emphasising the mystery of unity and the divine love of the Triune God.

Holy Trinity icon – symbolism and meaning

The representation of the Holy Trinity after Andrei Rublev is rooted in the biblical story of Abraham’s hospitality by the oaks of Mamre. In the iconographic tradition, however, the three Angels came to be understood as an image of the Holy Trinity — the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Nothing in this composition is accidental. The figures remain in a profound relationship with one another, and their arrangement creates a calm visual rhythm that draws the eye towards the centre of the table. The open space before it may be understood as a symbolic invitation for the viewer to enter into the mystery of divine communion.

For me, it is precisely this silence and harmony that are most important in the image of the Trinity. The icon does not impose itself on the viewer. It invites one to pause, slow down and enter a space of contemplation.

Traditional technique and the light of gold

This hand-painted Holy Trinity icon was created using the traditional technique of egg tempera on a lime wood panel and enriched with hand-applied gold leaf.

The golden background creates a timeless spiritual space characteristic of sacred icon art. It is not merely decorative. In the iconographic tradition, gold symbolises a light that does not come from a natural source, but refers to the presence of God and the spiritual realm.

Depending on the angle of view and the light in the room, the gilded surface changes its character. At times it appears calm and subdued, while at others it reflects the light more intensely, allowing the icon to reveal a different presence throughout the day.

The gilded elements were executed entirely by hand, with careful attention to detail and to the character of traditional sacred art. Their precise and time-consuming preparation forms an important part of the icon-making process.

Silence, colour and the rhythm of the garments

In this work, I paid particular attention to the subtlety of light, the rhythm of the garments and the calmness of the gestures and expressions of the figures.

The layers of egg tempera are built gradually. Successive highlights reveal the forms of the faces, hands and garments without harsh contrasts. In this way, the figures retain the stillness and inner concentration characteristic of traditional icons.

The harmonious colour palette was carefully subordinated to the composition as a whole. Colour does not serve only a decorative function. It helps create the rhythm of the image, guide the eye between the figures and strengthen their relationship with one another.

My inspiration came both from the classical iconographic tradition and from a personal search for beauty hidden within simplicity, harmony and sacred light.

Tradition and contemporary sensitivity

In painting this icon, I did not want simply to reproduce a historical model. It was important to preserve its symbolism and spiritual character while also allowing space for my own artistic sensitivity.

The Holy Trinity icon after Andrei Rublev therefore becomes a meeting point between tradition and an individual way of experiencing colour, light and silence. The ancient techniques of egg tempera and gilding are combined with a contemporary, attentive approach to the icon as both a sacred image and an artwork present within a modern interior.

The icon may find its place in a private prayer space, study, living room or another area intended for quiet reflection and contemplation. It may also become a meaningful gift for a wedding, anniversary, jubilee or another important occasion.

This is an original, entirely handmade work that may, over time, become part of a personal or family story.
