Where to Place an Icon at Home? A Practical Guide for Beginners

Hand-painted Eleusa icon created in egg tempera and 23.75K gold leaf on linden wood panel

You are buying your first icon, or perhaps you are beginning to paint your own. A very natural question then appears: what comes next? Where should an icon be placed? Can it hang in the bedroom? Can it be placed above a child’s bed? Or should it be kept only in a prayer corner?

In the tradition of the Christian East, an icon is not an ordinary painting, a decoration, an amulet, or a talisman. It is a sacred image that leads toward prayer, stillness, and the presence of God. Icons are often called “windows to heaven” because they do not stop the gaze at the beauty of the form alone, but invite us into a deeper spiritual encounter.

This is why it is worth placing an icon somewhere you can truly pause before it. The space does not have to be perfect or elaborate. What matters most is that the icon becomes present in daily home life, rather than being hung accidentally among other objects.

Where is the best place to hang an icon?

On the eastern wall of the room

In the Eastern Christian tradition, icons are often placed on the eastern wall of a room. The East carries deep symbolic meaning, as it is associated with light, resurrection, and the expectation of Christ’s coming.

However, the layout of a home does not always make it possible to follow this rule exactly. If you cannot place the icon on an eastern wall, simply choose a dignified, peaceful, and visible place.

In a home prayer corner

This is one of the most beautiful places for an icon. It may be a small shelf, a section of wall, a chest of drawers, or a specially arranged prayer corner. An icon, a candle, an oil lamp, the Holy Scripture, or a prayer book are enough.

Such a space helps us pause in the middle of everyday life. It reminds us that prayer does not need to be separate from daily living, but can become part of the rhythm of the home.

In the living room or dining room

An icon may also be placed in a shared space of the home, such as the living room, dining room, or another place where the family gathers around the table. In such a space, the icon becomes a quiet sign of God’s presence among everyday conversations, meals, and family life.

It does not need to dominate the interior, but it should be present with dignity and respect.

In the bedroom

An icon may be placed in the bedroom. Icons of Christ, the Mother of God, the Guardian Angel, or a patron saint are often chosen for this space. The icon may hang above the headboard, beside the bed, or on a wall where the gaze can easily rest before sleep and after waking.

It is better, however, to avoid hanging an icon directly above the head, mainly for practical and safety reasons. A stable, calm, and harmonious place will be more appropriate.

In a child’s room

An icon in a child’s room can be a beautiful sign of care and spiritual presence. Icons of the Guardian Angel, the Mother of God with the Child, Christ blessing children, or the child’s patron saint are especially suitable.

It is worth placing the icon securely, in a spot where it will not fall or be accidentally damaged.

What should be avoided when placing an icon?

An icon calls for respect. This does not mean fear or exaggeration, but an awareness that it is not an ordinary decorative element.

An icon should not be placed in a bathroom or toilet. In tradition, these are not considered prayerful or dignified places for a sacred image.

It is also better not to place an icon among random everyday objects such as keys, a phone, a wallet, cosmetics, or documents. An icon should not be treated as a shelf, a background for daily items, or an ornament among decorations.

It is wise to avoid places that are very humid, strongly exposed to sunlight, or subject to major temperature changes. This is especially important when the icon has been painted in the traditional technique of egg tempera on wood and gilded with real gold.

How to care for an icon

An icon does not require complicated care. From time to time, it is best to gently dust it with a soft, dry brush or a very soft cloth. Do not use detergents, wet wipes, wood-care products, or chemical cleaners.

If the icon is painted in egg tempera, it should be protected from direct sunlight, moisture, and intense heat. Wood, natural pigments, and gold are noble materials, but they require calm and stable conditions.

A candle or an oil lamp may be lit before the icon. This is a beautiful sign of reverence and prayerful presence. However, safety should always come first, and an open flame should never be left unattended.

The most important thing is the encounter

An icon does not “work” by itself. It is not a magical object that automatically protects the home. Its meaning is revealed when a person stops before it, looks at it, prays, and opens the heart.

That is why the best place for an icon is one you will truly return to. It may be a home prayer corner, a bedroom, a living room, a dining room, or a child’s room. What matters most is that the icon is present in the space of life, not merely hung as a beautiful object.

An icon brings silence, light, and a reminder of what is sacred into the home. Let it be placed where everyday life can, even for a moment, meet prayer.

In my work I seek harmony between light, color and emotion.
